Anglian-garage conversion..

Hi had a rep round yesterday r.e a garage conversion or conservatory..they have made us an appointment for tommorow afternoon r.e the garage part. He said there will be a minimum 40% discount but the more people who had it done the more discount (we live on a new estate and he had 11 apts booked apparantly so far!)

Anyway i am not gullible but wondered really what they are like? good, bad, expensive..more than a builder i mean?..are we looking at a fortune or are they as good as any?
Thanks

Why do they insist on all this nonsense about 40% discounts. They should quote the actual price from the very beginning. All the "discount" stuff is just a come on to make people think that they are getting a bargain. If it was me I would think that they were trying to rip me off. By quoting a higher price and then offering something off of it I would consider that they were not serious about the price. They are offering a high price in the hope that some ill-informed mug will accept it. Then, if they get a bit of resistance they bring down the price to what it should have been in the first place. The only thing that matters is the bottom line and any delay in offering the cheapest price straight away, is just in case they can get a better price from the occasional naive buyer. I feel the same way about shops that say that they will match the price of their competitors. If they are prepared to sell cheaper, then they should. Not wait until someone forces them into it
In any case you should get at least a couple of quotes from local suppliers.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Hi thanks for the reply..yes i agree with what you are saying and don't really take any notice of this discount rubbish! at the end of the day the price we have to shell out to them is the only important one imo. He rung earlier just checking details and that we are still ok for the apt and we will go from there..

they will sound convincing, and the pressure will be on to sign up TODAY, look for the closing questions, "if I get it for X then you'll proceed today?" "what things do I have to offer for you to agree"

27col is spot on. Its a numbers game AND people do buy at "high" prices

I ALWAYS recommend people get things in writting, firstly many wont commit to putting stuff in writting, secondly it buys you time to get other offers, and consider whats best.

When he promises thats the final final figure, then say a competitor has offered it £1k cheaper....his next question will be "so if I can do it for the same money, would we have a deal?"

Buying quality goods which last, should be an investment that saves money. :T
Buying cheap products which fail, wastes money and costs twice as much in the long run.

Tell the salesman he has one, and only one chance to quote you a price, so he better make it his best price, as he can't have more than one bite at the cherry.
"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"
  • We had a conversion done and got prices from local builders who had done garage conversions locally and one from a specialist garage conversion company. Although a bit more expensive the others www.garageconversion.com got our business as the builder actually in charge of the local franchise (Craig Nuttal) clearly knew his stuff and basically only did garage conversions so was able to meet all targets and problems encountered along the way . Also came with a FMB master guarantee for 10 years. They were in and out within 2 weeks as promised.

The downside of them was I had to initially deal with a sales idiot who also used the discounting technique after having come out with a ridiculous quote and pretty much being shown the door at that point. They actually got the work in spite of the salesman rather than because of him!

Hi well we had them round and they said no due to not having a window or door in (which they already knew) they said it was a legal requirement so that's that! think he was pretty narked as the whole rd is the same but hey!

a neat trick i've found with window reps (keeping them on side) is to be honest. several times i've said i'm getting multiple quotes, ask them for the price they want to quote and ask the rep for their mobile number. They will be much more keen to play ball if they think they are going to get the commission.
I am a building surveyor and will provide advice based upon what you tell me. It is just that, advice and not instructions. Based on the fact you're getting it for free expect it to be vague! :D

Hi i'm not sure what you are getting at? what he was saying was because the garage is under a town house it has no ventilation, he wanted to put a window in the front whereas we do not want the garage door removed/changed so said no..due to this he said we could not have it done..
