Old coins - what to do with them

Not too sure if this is the right thread, please feel free to move it.

My friend has found some OLD 10p and 5p coins whilst clearing out her grandmother's home. Both of these have been out of circulation around the early 90s. There is about £2-3 in coins

Are they legal tender? What is the best way of getting rid of them? My friend's grandmother thinks she can spend them in shops. I'm thinking no.

I had a look at them and cannot believe how heavy the old 10p coin is. Is heavier than the £2 but a similar size.

If you are not worried about actually being able to spend the money why don't you take it to a charity shop. They will take the coins for you

I believe you can take them to your bank and pay them into your account. Shops don't have to take them, but they are still legal tender, I think.

    Shops won't take them.

Try your bank, failing that Bank of England.

Also eBay as any old tat will sell on there.
  • no, banks are not obliged to take them either. both those coins had a surrendering date years ago!
