British Gas?

Last year I capped along with most of us. i capped to British gas Dec 09 however I've now received a letter saying i owe money to to my tarriff ending. Now I have written proof and confirmation of the tarriff i was on and usually over paid, always being in credit. My question is do I phone demanding to be freed from my contract blah blah or is there a better british gas deal I should ask to be put on due to the inconvenience. Moneysupermarket says a better deal would be edf online tarriff but I'm not sure.

Hi rae25 - It may be that the bills for the year you were on the capped rate were estimated, in which case despite the fact your D/debit account was always showing a credit, your actual use was higher than the estimates - Your only option is to do some homework on the bills to prove or disprove the debt
    Good Luck

The bills weren't estimated and I regularly gave exact readings via website and when they did come out to check it was fine.

Are they saying you are actually in debt or do they just want to increase your debit? If the tariff finishes in December then you have the three months to April on a more expensive tariff to account for.

And British Gas regularly ignore submitted exact readings and bill you according to their generous (in their favour) estimates regardless. Presumably they hope people won't double check and just pay it.

Good point... I go for whats cheapest at the time. I know my useage and if something comes along thats cheaper I just switch.

Capping is good but most tie you into a contract not allowing you to switch until the contract is finished - perticulally annoying if you've just switched and somethning cheap comes along.
