Grants for energy efficiency

We're just about to buy a house, built in the late 70s and needs all new central heating put it.

I was wondering if anyone knew if there are local grants available for central heating, loft insulation, cavity walls etc?

We are not eligible for the Warm Front grant - are there any others? Found some information on grants for solar panels etc, which is not suitable for the property.

We just wondered as we were already ripping the house apart whether there was anything else we should be doing? Can you do cavity walls on a small terraced property?

Size and type of property are not the determining factors whether you can have your the cavity within the walls filled. - the answer instead simply depends on whether your walls have cavities that can be filled.

Since your house was built after 1930 it will likely have cavity walls and so there will be a cavity to be filled - assuming it has not already been. The surveyor from the insulating company will confirm the position when (s)he visits - the visit will be free.

If you are not eligible for a full grant to pay for loft and / or cavity wall insulation then expect to pay a subsidised price of between £150 and £195 for each.

Thank you for your reply :)

So there is a partial grant to be had for insulation? Do I speak to the local council about this?

http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/What-can-I-do-today/Energy-saving-grants-and-offers/Search-for-grants-and-offers provides a list of grants

TBH even if you get a warm front grant it wouldn't cover full CH you need to be on a certain 16k or less income or get council tax benefit

You may get discount for loft of cavity wall check site above as you havent got a energy supplier in new house yet as you said your about to buy then once you move ask them so do.

I hope you got house at a good price given no CH or very old CH

The various companies that are currently doing the insulation are receiving part payment automatically from the energy companies (who have been "forced" to spend part of their profit on energy efficiency measures) so the price they offer to the public is the already subsidised price.

Some of the energy companies are offering the insulation service directly (although they may sub-contract it out).

There are one or two local authorities that are carrying out the insulating themselves and combining the subsidy they receive from teh energy companies with some of their own cash to give completely free insulation to all - Knowlsley in Merseyside was (is?) one.

Easiest way to check what grants are available in your area is to use the grant checker on the Engery Saving Trust website. Link here: http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/What-can-I-do-today/Energy-saving-grants-and-offers/Search-for-grants-and-offers

Thanks savemoney and jk for your posts! Was just what I was looking for :)

By the looks of it we can get cavity wall and loft insulation for £200 each, exactly as you estimated jk. Thanks again, we will no doubt try and organise this once we move in.

You can fit your own loft insulation in a small terrace for a lot less than £200. Wickes often do '2 rolls for the price of 1' promos on loft insulation. Then half a day's (fairly unpleasant) work.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I have actually stumbled across a company today which is offering "FULLY INSULATE YOUR HOME ONLY £249 : Take advantage of our LIMITED PERIOD SPECIAL OFFER and get CAVITY WALL AND LOFT INSULATION for ONLY £249, saving your money to spend on the finer things in life. Price is based on standard house sizes and is subject to survey."
