Can't Get Dell Monitor to Work With Another Machine

Hi,
I bought one of those Dell 5150s with 19inch telly for £400 that were recently on the Grabit board.
Bargain though it may be, the monitor (an E196FP TC099), does not seem as good as my existing Hercules.
I tried to swap them over but the Dell would not work with my old PC. It remained resolutely blank. It did not display the colour check screen it normally displays when disconnected, so I guess it was getting a signal.
Although there are no drivers installed for this monitor, I would expect to see it boot up at least, but there is nothing at all.
As far as I can see, it's just an analogue VGA, with a VGA connector, which I am connecting to a VGA graphics card, so why's it not working? Am I missing something in the equation.
Any ideas gratefully received.
Also, when I say it's not as good as my other monitor I mean it appears fuzzier. Could this be down to using the onboard graphics, rather than the monitor itself? The other PC uses an NVidia 5600 (I think).
Thanks.

very odd...I'm using the same monitor on a self built machine and never had a problem
as you have mentioned, it should show on boot....you've not had graphics card in the machine have you and disabled the onboard graphics?Welcome, rogerramjet.

is the screen resolution turned up too high? try 1024x768, then plug it in.
the fuzziness may be caused by not setting it to the optimal resolution (which is written on the plastic cover that protected the screen when you bought it).
you could also try this:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/7/0/b7019730-0fa3-47a9-a159-98b80c185aad/setup.exeEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Try running the setup disc that came with the monitor - it should adjust resolution automatically for you. If this doesn't work your old PC might have an out of date graphics card. Finally, use the new VGA cable if you haven't ried it yet.0
