You don't have an electric immersion back up on a hot water tank do you? If you do, it may be left on.

Update 1 - 24 hours since meter reading and 3 units used (thats nothing is it??)

    3 things.

    1. my hot water was off for the duration of this as I was having some plumbing done, so I will get a handy comparison with a day heating water tomorrow, and

    2. This has made me happy cause its proof im not going mad and there has to be something wrong somewhere.

    3. My mum pointed out to me last night that my meter was replaced about 12 months ago...

You heat water by electric? That'll be the cause of the high bill. We left our immersion heater on by accident for three months and our bill was huge.

no i dont its Gas, but I had in my head that if the rewire of the programmer on this is the only big job Ive had done in last 12 months i need to rule it out. Im fairly confident it will make no difference when i turn it back on.

    Reeeeeesult!!

After a week straight of 5 unit a day use, I was confused and a bit weirded out as EON insisted I had used more.

Today I found the sticker near my new meter. When Scottish power swapped it out, they removed one and put the new one in at zero (and didnt pass this info on to EON!) - Ive been billed for 4550 units I havent used!

Thanks to the nice lady at Eon who is investigating and recalculating my bill - I can see not Eons fault but I am mad at Scottish Power...

5.5 units a day - what does that work out at?

I am in a similar situation to OP.

I live in a one bedroom flat with my OH and we both work full time. EON supply our electric and we have been paying £100-125 per month for the last 2.5 years. We have queried this several times, and the meter has supposedly been checked, but always the same.

We also have the usual appliances, only Fridge/broadband on all day and we switch TV/playstation/sky off at mains every night. We only turn on microwave/kettle toster on at the mains when we need. I probably do 4 loads of washing a week- never tumble dry.

The heating is electric, but we havent used it at all over the summer months... yet our bills are always so high. I don't get it. I though we just must have really inefficient appliances.

    Hi Sophie, :hello:

The monthly amount you mention is plausible for an all electric flat, however it’s worth doing some investigating to make sure.

Looking around this forum you will see lots of threads and posts about electric heating and the expensive bills it can cause.

The first thing I’d recommend is start taking daily meter readings, this is useful as you’ll be able to see what electricity you are using in a short space of time, and pick out what appliances are using what amount of energy.

Day by day, you’ll see how some appliances you use affect your daily consumption, and possibly highlight the things that are using a lot and then cut back accordingly.

When you have some daily figures you can compare these with the figures E.ON are billing you, remember to take seasonal variation into account, as your heating isn’t being used at present.

E.ON can help you with looking at the consumption, if you call and ask for assistance the consumption department will go through your usage with you to establish if the bills are accurate.

The monthly amount will be an average of your annual usage over 12 months, so effectively at this time of the year you won’t be using anywhere near that much but in the winter your usage will be a lot higher.

If the meter has been checked already, was a check meter installed alongside the normal meter? What were the results?
