Renting new house - how to discover the Telephone Provider?

Seems a silly situation but we've just started renting a house (haven't moved in yet) and we are struggling to find out who the telephone line is with. The letting agents don't seem to know - there is a phone connected up and it has a dialtone but Ive tried 100,150 and ringing our current number and we get "number is not available". Maybe its incoming calls only?
We have not had any mail from a telecoms company apart from a card from BT asking whether we would like to return to them and offering incentives so Im a bit stumped. Ive rung BT but they can't tell us who it is with - Although they say we can transfer to them without knowing who the house is with currently - suppose this is an option
Any ideas anyone?

Try 17070 - you may get an automated announcement of the line's number.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

You probably know the phone number, but that's not what you want. By dialling 150, it will connect you to customer services, so when connected, ask THEM who they are and give them the line number to confirm.0
