Switching to Scottish Power?

Hi, I am a bit of a newbie with all this energy business (so forgive me for silly questions!!).

I moved into my own place back in April and I'm now looking to lower my energy bill. My partner and I are currently with EON and our yearly quote is about £636 (going by what we have already spent). Scottish Power have quoted us £544 a year with low rates guaranteed till Aug 2010(Early cancellation fees apply). Greasy Palm are offering £70 cashback for the switch too.

Having just typed that out it seems stupid not to do it...I was wondering if anyone would recommed Scottish Power? Should I switch now or wait? Just needing a little reassurance :o

Many thanks :D

If you look on my thread you will see the majority of us are switching to the "EDF v5" deal, which is comeing up best on all the comparison sites (ie u-switch.com- confused.com- moneysupermarket.com etc) and you'll get £60 cashback with the" topcashback " site as well, so i would check it out before jumping ship. at the end of the day it's entirely your decision. buit apparently it is closeing soon so don't delay.

Because you only moved in in April there no history of what power you will consume over a full year or it's cost, so the quotes your getting are worthless. It is however possible to get a very, very rough estimate from the start meter reading when you moved in and what your meter reads now, but, the kind of heating you have will make a big difference.
Your best bet is to post your consumption over the known period on this board and list what heating/hotwater systems you have, with their Kw consumptions.
    Good Luck

    Just to echo the above.

Until you get a clearer indication of what your annual consumption is (in kWh) it will be almost impossible to know where best to take your business.

Another factor that is often not included in energy comparison sites calculations is whether you will be paying an EXTRA IGT charge.
(This is usually applicable to new build houses. IIRC if your gas meter reference number starts with a 74 or 75 then you are likely to have to add this (~£40 per year) onto the quoted annual bill. This is further complicated by the fact that some companies [British Gas for one], and some tariffs with other suppliers include this charge in their rates)!!

Having said that, if you are going to get £70 for switching (remember Cashback is never guaranteed!), then that sweetens the deal; maybe enough to tide you over until you get a clearer indication of your actual consumption.

With regard to Scottish Power, I have been with SP for around 18 months and not really had a problem with them. Of course it is only when there IS a problem that it is possible to determine whether they are actually worth dealing with.
That said, I am also in the middle of transfering to EDF at the moment. It was a tough decision for me as the savings weren't that great, and the tariff that I was on had remained very competitive until this latest offer, in the end the cashback pushed the bar just enough to make the switch.

Given my experience I wouldn't hesitate to go back to SP when the EDF tariff finishes in July next year. (I could not say the same of nPower or British Gas, both of which where very disappointing in my experience).
