Hiya
I am looking to buy a new digital camera. I want to use it for taking pictures of the family etc nothing profesional or anything. But I would like to have nice clear pictures and ones that come out well close up too.
I was looking at the canon ixus 55. it seems to have what I want and is a good size for my pocket....don't want anything too big.
Is this a good one? or can you recommend any good ones?
Thank you in advance

Most of the Ixus series are good, they're not the cheapest, but you're paying for a quality bit of kit in a small size camera wrapped in snazzy looking metal.
A couple of reviews for you at Steve's digicams and DPReview
I'd skip straight to the conclusion of the reviews unless you're a detail freak...
All in all they seem to like it?0 -
My sis has that camera. She loves it. Great for taking on hols or on a night out.
Have you had a look review sites like Steves Digital Cameras, DP Reviews and DC Resources (all easily found on Google)?"An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" - Mahatma Gandhi0 -
Buy a Casio Exilim z750, great reviews at CNET.com , I own one, battery goes for ages, take over 400 photos with a single charge. Excellent day and night results. Will recommend it to anyone.Inside I am THINKING.0

Hi, Canon have an outlet shop on ebay selling this camera starting bid is £81 ebay id is canon_uk10

The most important things are the quality of the CCD and the quality of the lens ... if either of these is poor then you will never get a good picture. I have a 4mp Kodak which takes an excellent picture and a cheap £25 5mp Concord that I keep in the car (and you can see why it was only £25).
Canon make excellent cameras and the Ixus seems to be a typical Canon quality product. One of the things that was important to me though was that it could take standard AA/AAA rechargeable battteries to save me having to buy expensive custom batteries (just something to consider)
IvanI don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!0 -
I have the Ixus 55 and I have to say it is fantastic. Having had many bulky digitals, this is quite simply exquisite.
The pic quality is excellent and it is so easy to use. The larger screen makes pictures (both in take and playback mode) very clear to see.
I bought mine about 4 months ago from Pixmania who were the cheapest then, with a voucher for £10 odd from pricerunner. I bought the case separately from amazon.
I wish you luck in your purchase, but if you buy the Ixus 55, then you won't need it!0 -

Just as an aside, I can't stand the newer exilim series cameras, my brother in law has one (he loves it as well), but for me it just doesn't fit in my hand properly.
This doesn't mean the exilim is rubbish, but it is a perfect example of why you should also get yourself along to a camera shop and actually pick the fella's up before you buy. Take a real look at it and see what you think, sometimes the web just isn't enough...

My mother in law was recently looking for an ultra compact digi cam (both the panasonic and ixus's fall into this category, and this was the results I dug up for her...
Canon Digital Ixus 55
Good brand and a long history in the ultra compact market. Known for good build quality and picture quality. The one of the only cameras in the list to include a big LCD ( 2.5") and a viewfinder.
A review can be found HERE (note, this is an american review, and the model name is different, but it is the same camera) or HERE and the best price I could find is around £185.
Casio Exilim EX-S500
One to take a look at as the design is very thin (could be good or bad depending on your preference!)
A review can be found HERE and the best price I could find is around £170.
Fujifilm Finepix F10
Excellent battery life (the longest out of these cameras) and very good at lower light pictures. It also won the best pocket camera award last year
A review can be found HERE or HERE and the best price I could find is around £150.
Nikon Coolpix S3
I'm not 100% convinced by this one, but will leave it in as it's very different and might appeal.
A review can be found HERE and the best price I could find is around £155..
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX9
Has a something called image stabilisation, basically it tries to correct camera shake and should resulter in less blurry pictures at lower light.
A review can be found HERE or HERE and the best price I could find is around £150 (on sale at comet, may go up...).0
