Being the trustworthy and accepting sort that I am, I just assumed that everything 'P11D' wise was correct. After all, my employers for the last 10 years have all been businesses that have employed more than 100,000 people in total - so why wouldn't they know what they're doing? And I've no idea about tax anyway.

    Big mistake.

After being issued with a bill from HMRC for about £3k in underpaid tax that covered a period in which my actual pay and benefits didn't change, further analysis of the P11Ds from the last 3 years show errors on them all, ranging from a full years car benefit being applied to a role in which I only worked 7 months to capital contributions by the company on my behalf, not being recorded.

After lengthy conversations with HMRC, and I mean lengthy, the bottom of the issue was reached and the emphasis is on me to contact my old businesses and get them to see the error of their ways and amend the P11Ds accordingly.

It's a long process, punctuated by bouts of frustration, is all I will say about it. Apart from the fact that I'm now considering employing the services of a tax specialist accountant because I'm spending far more time than can be considered healthy talking to people who dont know what I'm talking about, who aren't in positions to make decisions anyway.

And in the meantime, until it's sorted, I technically still owe the HMRC the princely sum of £3k - £350 per month of which they continue to extract from my salary. .

Next time, my P11D will be checked festidiously.

And I'd recommend that yours is too.
  • I get a P11D every year, and the only 'benefit' I get is my fuel paid when I go somewhere other than where I normally work. I suppose it is a benefit.. as I sit here thinking whilst typing, as they pay out for "wear and tear" as well (about 65p/mile !).

    I'll shut up..

The bulb keeps flickering in my tiny mind about anything else that might be wrong in P11ds for previous years.

Does anyone know how easy it is to lay your hands on old P60's and P11d's from either HMRC or old businesses, is it something that is easy to get hold of/acceptable to ask for?

    Thanks
