New PC advice? windows 7

Hi all,
wondered if anyone could make some suggestions to me.

I'm after a new PC lookin to spend around £400 - 500.

While checking them out i find out that the new windows 7 is released in oct. I've seen some sellers like argos, offer the upgrade to W7 when it is released for some of their PCs they are selling now. (i assume this is a free upgrade although they don't make it clear).

I'm caught between waiting a few months and buying a PC with W7 pre installed and buying a PC now with one of these free upgrade offers.

But then will upgrading be a potential headache?

What does anyone think?

  • At this moment I'm not sure whether the versions in the promotion are going to be the full retail versions like what everyone has pre ordered or whether the manufacturer will be shipping upgrade versions.

In the case of the former, you won't be able to upgrade your current installation as a clean install is required. While it is the better option overall, you will have to reinstall your programs and make sure you back up all of your files. It shouldn't be more than about two hours work though. If it is an upgrade version then that process won't be neccessary.

In terms of the difficulty, it's actually a fairly straightforward process. Just make sure you have a backup of everything and take your time.

I can't speak for Argos, but our (DSGi) upgrade offer works something like this:
    1. Buy a computer with Vista Premium or above.
    2. Register on the upgrade website
    3. On October 22nd, you'll get details of how to get your upgrade
    4. You just pay P&P* for the upgrade disc and it's sent to you
*P&P is between £9 and £26 depending on manufacturer :o

    OR

    1. Buy a standalone copy of Vista
    2. Keep your receipt
    3. Go in with your receipt to a PCWorld store to get your free upgrade copy
    4 ?????

If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
