Sony Walkman mp3/4 to use with car stereo

Can you use a Sony mp3/4 player in the car if you have a mp3/ bluetooth stereo. I want to buy a present for my son so he can play his music whilst driving, but i don't have a clue what he needs.:o

If it's Bluetooth, yes. But for Bluetooth you are better getting a Samsung mp3 player as it's so much better implemented.

There have been issues with Sony and car stereos because Sony uses MTP instead of UMS for file transfer whereas most other brands are UMS or at least offer the option of MTP/UMS.

But Bluetooth works fine and a Sony A series (I forget which model has BT) or most Samsung players will work fine.

be careful, 90% of modern head units are branded as mps stereos but all this means is that they can play mp3 cds and they may not have the correct input to play from an actual mp3 player

bluetooth will work but bluetooth mp3 players are expensive and few and far between, phones are the target of bluetooth enabled head units. plus battery life will be appalling.

im not sure what you are asking

do you want to buy an mp3 player

    a stereo for his car

    or both?
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

My son has a Wharfedale WH-180 in-car cd head unit which is mp3 and bluetooth compatible.

I wanted to get him an mp3 player so he can play his music via the stereo.

I am confusing myself now sorry.

Then Bluetooth will work fine. Nearly all Samsungs and a few Sony players have Bluetooth.

seeing it has a usb input thats a terrible idea

im not sure what software the wharfedale has but usb is the far better idea for connecting mp3 players to headunits

bluetooth connections will drain battery life of the mp3 unless you shell out more money for an incar charger not to mention having to spend extra for bluetooth on the mp3 player in the first place (oh and did i mention the inferior quality supplied over bluetooth which in the dire 4x20watt output of the wharfedale would make an appalling attempt to make a half decent in car system)

    so what i suggest

any mp3 with a usb which last time i checked was all of them........

then plug it into the stereo via the usb port

this will mean battery life is maintained as the headunit should power the player, plus you get better sound quality and maybe (not a definite) the head unit will be capable of handling the mp3 data menus itself ie your son can browse his songs on the head unit rather than the player itself which he may still have to do depending on the software (but its a certainty with the bluetooth)

i too suggest sony or samsung

    my personal favourite

is the sony x series but it may be out of budget

    hope i helped op

ps. i work selling and fitting these headunits so i know what im talking about when it comes to what connections you want, usb is king right now.

Sony won't work over USB. All it will do is charge the unit. Unless it's a car-stereo which specifically supports the dreaded MTP.

ok, fair enough, im used to working with better makes than wharfedale so had no idea it didnt support mtp, pretty much all stereos i work with do support it.

ok so the op juist need to buy something else that supports ums. bluetooth is definitely not the way to go though

Thanks for all your replies and help. I have looked at the manual for the Wharfedale and it has a USB interface. Would either of following work with it:-

High-end Kenwoods and JVCs don't support MTP. Since the OP asked about Bluetooth and Sony Walkmans, I answered.

The Samsung will work via MSC (UMS) and USB. The Sony (I own the same model) won't work at all.

Any Bluetooth player - Sony, Samsung etc - will work. Samsung Bluetooth players are particularly good and can be had quite cheaply.

Almost any player at all will work via USB except Sony.

Here is the newer version of that Samsung.
