Hi
Can i cash a cheque at cash converters that my mum wrote me?
It was my birthday yesterday and she gave me a £300 cheque and was wondering if i can cash it as i dont want to wait for the bank.
Ive cashed a work cheque there before but i know i was allowed that time as its a 3rd party cheque

might be worth calling to check, but i think you can only cash your own cheques (with guarantee card etc), or recognised 3rd parties- DSS giro's, big name firms etc.
do check the yellow pages- i think they have rate discount vouchers..?Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0 -
Might be difficult for them to allow you cash a personal chq of this nature. Though worth trying. If you are in a hurry, you can express it thru your bank for a small fee of no more than £15 (varies from bank to bank).
It is called special presentation.0 -
If you and your mum bank at the same branch, the cheque will proobably clear immediately and, also, it might do so if your bank is the same as your mum's but at different branches.
I presented a Lloyds cheque from the Channel Islands into my Lloyds account here in Yorkshire and 30 minutes later, the cheque was showing as available funds to spend on my internet banking page.
I don't know whether this applies every time, but it is worth asking at your bank if it is possible before paying fees to third parties for clearance. It's unlikely to work that quickly if you have different banks, though.0 -
Another approach.
Who do you and your mum bank with?
Do both banks offer Faster Payments?
Does your mum have internet banking?
If yes to the last two, get your mum to make an online transfer to your account and it will be there within a couple of hours.
I move money from HSBC to Alliance & Leicester this way, so can vouch for the system working, if both banks offer Faster Payments. For more info just google Faster Payments.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.

I'm sorry, I don't apologise. That's just the way I am. Homer (Simpson)0 -

Very true. A better option is faster payment if mummy's bank offers it.....

Cheque cashing at Cash Converters ; - "Our cheque cashing service is fast and easy, and really useful if you do not have a bank account or if you need to cash a 3rd party cheque"
Don't forget they will take a percentage of your cheque! Why is it so urgent that you have the cash now? Could your mother not get the cash from an ATM?
They take a lot of personal details from you, including photo ID; - "We also require that you have your photograph stored in our database.".
"Generate instant cash from your cheques today!
Here's how it works- Bring your third-party a/c payee cheque(s) to us, along with your identification (see below for details).
- We will verify the cheque and check the ID.
- You will then be told how much cash you will receive against the cheque.
- You will also be asked to provide personal details for our cheque cashing database. Once on this database, subsequent transactions take a fraction of the time, since you will only have to provide one document of ID.
- We also require that you have your photograph stored in our database.
- Finally, you sign a declaration on the back of the cheque, and your cash will be presented to you immediately.
- The vendor must be over 18 years of age (vendors aged between 16 and 18 years old are permitted only at our stores' discretion, so please check for details).
- You will need to bring a minimum of three documents of identification - including at least one signature and another with proof of address, e.g. driving licence, passport or similar. We will need to check these before we can give you any cash for your cheque.
- Your information, photo and subsequent history records will be entered onto our computer database."

Why don't you just ask your mum if she could go to the bank and get you cash instead?
Giver her the cheque back and save yourself £10.0
