please can someone advise

Hiya,
Sorry if I've posted in the wrong place new to site but really need advise
My husband bought a used car recently from a friend of a friend
The car was reg in there name but whislt they owned the car the log book was stolen from the car and everything was loged with the police
I thought they would get a replacement log book and sign it over to hubby
But they wrote a letter saying he is the new owner and they no longer own the vehicle
The car is due for tax 1st sept and all the document went to them
I have called dvla but seem to be going round in circle with previous owner
I know if we reg car there is a £25 fee but do we have to pay this ??
we have mot and all the rest but no v5c and no v5c/2w where he signs to say hes the new keeper...how can we tax the car and whats the best thing to do
I am wheelchair bound so need the car
Thanks in advance for any advice :)

Why would someone just steal a log book?

Personally, I would have run a mile when I was told the V5 logbook had been stolen and no replacement was available.

It looks as if you will have to pay for it and do it quickly. If the car isnt registered to you it takes a bit longer for the log book to come through from DVLA and you may not be able to tax it when its due..
It does sound a little odd(why didnt he apply for a new one).
Did you do any checks on the car.....dont want to frighten you but the 'lost log book' may have been a story to hide something like being a write off..
 Am thinking of a new one:beer:
  • Hi all,
Thanks for the replies, Think we were to trusting :(
We were only told when we went to hand over cash and collect the car about the log book and they did give us a police crime number and said they would be recieving one off the dvla
But then said because they had informed them off the change off keeper, we needed to contact them ourselves..thats where the £25 fee comes in
Think we will pay the £25 fee and learn a lesson never to buy anything again without the prop documents..and the friend and friend of a friend are no longer friends..lmao
  • Have you done a HPI check on the car?
    Not Again
