The question makes sense in my head but not sure whether it will make sense to you guys! :rotfl:
Basically I have Tiscalis 1mb package. Problem is that over the last month or so it just seems alot slower.
What I was wondering was a) can this be due to the number of people using Tiscali at any one point, b) is it my computer, c) is it actually not running at 1.1mbps like it says it is, or d) something totally else?
Is there a program that tests your line speed or something?
Any help will be well appreciated guys.
Thanks
SS

Google for broadband speed test. Plenty there, e.g. http://www.adslguide.org/tools/speedtest.asp.0

It could be, it's called contention, not much you can do I'm afraid.b) is it my computer,
It could be, do you have anti-virus, firewall and anti-spyware installed? Are they up to date? Do you defrag your PC and check regularly for errors? Apply all Windows Updates? Clear your Internet Cache?c) is it actually not running at 1.1mbps like it says it is, or
Very unlikely you will get full speed all the time, you should be close to full speed at off peak times though. Use the test Chippy_Minton posted, but be aware this is an indication only and the result can be affected by various factors. You should run it on a regular basis to see trends in your speed.d) something totally else?
Could be, your line, interference (UNPLUG YOUR SKY BOX!), local exchange problems, ISP problems, the weather in China. OK, so maybe not the last one, but lots of things can and will affect your broadband speed.0 -

I always findInternet Frog good.
It does a download speed test and also upload too.
Just click on the speed test link on the left of the home page0 -
oh, I've just noticed you have Tiscali (and therefore my sympathy).
Some people are happy with them but try Googling 'tiscali complaints' and see what most peeps think of them re- download speeds, etc.0 -

I would suggest you try Dan Elwell's Broadband Speed Test, a set of up to 38 different tests on servers throughout the world. You will be surprised at the disparities!
The BeelineBandWidth server appears to be located in the US, which gives notoriously poor results for UK PCs. For twenty tests, I got an average of 43 "K/s" (bizarre unit? presumably kilobytes per second download speed?), equivalent to about 0.35 Mbps, on my 4 Mbps line. Not really believable, even at peak periods.
I tend to prefer the UK-based ADSLGuide speed test, suggested by Chippy Minton.
