PS3 Problem

I'm asking this question for my BIL.
His playstation 3 is playing up, he says it is freezing during gameplay and is unusually sluggish. I have no idea what the problem might be with it as I don't have a PS3 so have no experience of them.
Can anyone suggest what it could be.
Someone in the local pub has suggested it might be the HDD, but it is less than 18months old.
Any advice appreciated.
