Questions around doing a post-grad PGCE

Having already got a BA Hons in History and Post Grad Diploma in Political Communications, I am keen to go and do teaching.

Me and my Wife have been very lucky to have inherited money, allowing us to have bought a brand new house without a mortgage. With the mortgage gone, i am keen to see if it is financially viable.

We have a 18 month old child, live in Wales.

I am keen to do the PCGE post-grad, either Secondary History or Primary. The questions i have are;

Realistically, what bursary and grants are available? Ideally a i need an approx figure to work with over the year.

I already have a student loan, havent started repaying it due to me not earning above the threshold for an extended amount of time- is there ANY possibility of seeking to lend more?

I had and paid off both a student overdraft and a Career Development loan, can i re apply for new ones?

  • PGCE used to be £6k bursary and fees paid for primary and I think it might have been more for secondary shortage subjects - maths/science. Don't know whether it still is or not though as a number of years since I did my PGCE. There is also another route in - GTP. This is where a school agrees to take you on during your training period (on the job training) and you can be paid unqualified teacher rates - negotiated with the school. Following the training (whichever route you choose) you will then need to complete your NQT induction period which generally lasts 1 year or longer if you work on a part time basis. You can also get a student loan although from memory, it wasn't a lot (I have the figure of £1800 in my head but this may have changed)

    If you have a look on the tda website you may find more up todate info.
