I am contemplating adding a section to our site where people could choose to opt in to receive a newsletter. Can any one recommend any software that can deal with the opting in and out and sending newsletters?

If you have some sort of control panel (maybe cPanel) on your webhosting then you might be able to set this up automatically, if not then try contacting your hosting providor to ask if they provide any free mailing list software.

It depends on how you manage your site registrations.
If you use a database then you can simply add a column which relates to a tickbox indicating whether people wish to receive newsletters.
When you do the mailing, all you need to do is create a recordset of the email addresses using SQL and you then have a list of email addresses to mail to.0 -
If you are prepared and are able to develop a few PHP pages and edit your site with a form where users enter their email address and the PHP script updates a database with the user's address then you could simply do that.
However, as you have asked I am guesing that you probably don't want to do this. Many web hosts now offer pre-programmed either CGI scripts, perl scripts or PHP scripts as standard, so contact them if you can't see the option in your site's control panel.
Alternatively, there are some free ones available, just do a search on google for newsletter subscription system.0 -
If your website is setup with RSS, (or you could easily setup a blog that would probably come with RSS as standard) then Feedburner have just launched a new service -
