Buying a Cat D repaired
I've been looking at some Category D write offs that have been repaired and up for sale.
The one i'm seriously looking at is only 4 months old and it's for sale at half the new price saving over £7000 :j
Planning on keeping the car for some years so when I come to sell it the Cat D record won't really mean much in depreciation terms anyway.
Has anyone ever bought one , Had any problems getting it insured, problems with warranty, any good experiences out there.
Obviously i'll be getting an AA/RAC inspection if I decide to take it any further before buying and will insist it goes into a dealer for them to check the repair work too.

Can you give us the details of the car in question?0

If its only 7 months old then the damage that was repaired was considerable eg in excess of around 60% of the new price of the car.
It is important you inform your Insurers that the car is a Cat D or C write off as it can make a difference with some of them.
Please ensure all of the documentation is correct and tallies with any reg numbers and chassis numbers, it would also be sensible to perform a HPI check and if possible have a word of the original keeper to check the car is kosher and what type of damage the accident caused0 -
there may be corrosion problems in the future ...welding , cutting and filler work will comprimise the original rust protection
id consider a older car where minor damage like a broken light and bumper will write em off ...but that car must have had a good knock0 -
It's a peugeot 207 hdi 90 sport on an 09 plate
You can buy those on an 09 plate from a main dealer for around £10995..

I'd say that it could be bought from a dealer on a straight sale for £10000. That would suggest a private sale price of around £9k.
I assume the one you're looking at is around £7K as it has a list price of £14,300?
Therefore the price is 'about right' for this car, given that CAT D's make about 25-30% less than an unrepaired one.
If its been well fixed - receipts for all new genuine Peugeot parts and the AA inspection come back all clear then all should be fine. The only other thing i'd ask to see is proof that it was on a jig to check chassis alignment.0 -
Watch out for amateurs buying write off's doing them up and selling them on to naiive people. A prime example on this site:
all the w's motor-trade-insider dot co dot uk
its their main story0 -
I would avoid it, if you are unlucky enough to have another minor accident in it, it will be very difficult to repair, the filler will just all break up.
It will probably start rotting away as well, as others have suggested.
Advice, buy a slightly older but un-damaged car.0
