I have been plagued by viruses and have recently lost all sound to my computer, just wondering if this is just an ordinary fault or can viruses be to blame, I had a 007 virus which said was in my C:\System Volume Information if this means anything to anyone, spysweeper detected and removed it but still no sound. I have done all the troubleshooting tips but to no avail.

The last Windows Update included a hardware update for a certain sound card. This caused the sound on my daughter's PC to stop. My only option was to download a new driver or use the sound card driver from the orginal PC / motherboard driver CD.1) Click Start, right click on "My Computer" then choose "Properties".
2) Click the "Hardware" tab then "Device Manager".
3) Scroll down to the "Sound, Video & Game Controllers" section then expand it with the "+". If you see a yellow exclamation mark ! next to the sound card then you will need to fix by reinstalling the sound card driver.

A virus can do anythign the programmer likes, maybe except kill you, or eat all your cookies!!! Now that would be terrible0

Hi
A couple of things, go into Control Panel, Sound & Audio devices, and check that your sound isn't muted, also check here that the Speaker Volume is set to high, and if you click on Advanced, make sure you have the right settings for your Speaker setup.
Also from Control Panel, go to System, Hardware, and Device Manager, here you will see a list of all the hardware in your system, look for Sound Video and game controllers and see if your soundcard is listed, double click it and see if its working okay.
I agree, software is not covered under warranty, so if its just a matter of re-installing a soundcard driver, then it won't be covered.
Hopet this helps0 -

A big thankyou to all. Seems like just by going in to the control panel and re-checking the boxes that were already checked seems to have done the trick????? Crazy!0
