I'd appreciate some help in how to convert .mts files to something I can email to my aged mother to view? New camcorder is not as easy as the advertising suggests!

Thanks

    Hi
Apparently the program 'ffmpeg' will convert those mts files.
But it's not easy to use because it runs from the command line - you have to type in the instructions.
However, there's a graphical front end for ffmpeg called 'WinFF'. So you can use ffmpeg without needing the command line.
WinFF has several 'pre-sets' so you can convert to many different formats such as mpg or avi or whatever.
I've used WinFF a lot myself, but not for mts files.
WinFF is a free download from here:-http://winff.org/html_new/

Had a go - film is good, thanks, but the sound isn't synched. It's just a bit odd watching it as the mouth and words don't match. Can I do anything about this?

I don't know how to synch sound in a file, it's out of my league.

Have you tried converting the mts file to another different format instead?

Thanks for that, have installed it but it won't work without a registration code!

PS - now done the registration - had to pay but that's OK cos I'd want to use the programme loads.

See if HandBrake will convert them.

Thanks for that too. Have done the registriation thingy with 4Videosoft - now please tell me the 'best' format to choose from to convert too, there are LOADS!

All I want to do is to email it/or save onto disc so that my even more computer illiterate mother can open and view it.

    Mp4?

It's a pity you paid for it - HandBrake would have done the same thing for free.

As for formats, an h.264 mp4 is pretty good at squeezing things down to small file sizes while still maintaining quality, but your mother will need iTunes, QuickTime or VLC to view it.

:o - hey, ho! Wasn't much and the programme is pretty easy to use - a big plus. Thanks anyway.

She's got QuickTime so should be OK there. Did the convert thing and it's down to 15MB so probably can't email it (even though it's just 1.30 minutes long) so will stick it on a disc and post it.

Thanks to all for the help, it's much appreciated.
