Camera Problem

Hi, I have a problem with my quite old camera, which is a Fujifilm finepix f401.
When the camera is on, the lcd screen shows all the icons but no actual picture, as when you view the playback the picture is black. Almost as if a lens cap is on.
Any ideas MSE techies? :A

Probably a failed CCD. The early symptoms are described here:

Although your model doesn't appear in the "affected models" list, neither does mine (a FujiFilm S5000), but mine is starting to fail in exactly this way - you've probably just got the most extreme case (i.e. dead CCD).

What do the piccies look like when you load them onto your PC - if ok, could be LCD (display screen) rather than the CCD (imaging chip).

Worth a try, but generally the OP wouldn't see any icons on the LCD screen if the LCD screen had failed.

The pictures are just black with a few splodges of whatever colour happens to be there - loaded a pic onto the camera from the pc from another camera and that shows up fine on the lcd so i don't think it is a problem with the actual screen.
