Help with internet connection on asus 701sd

My sons school sold me a asus 701sd at a cut down price.
Its running linux and no matter how hard I try I cant get my internet connection on it.
I am with virgin media and it has been suggested to me that virgin do not accept linux is this true, and if so what internet provider will accept linux..:confused:

    The not supporting Linux is rubbish.
    Have you a wireless router?

    If you are trying a wireless connection then reading the link below it will not work as you need to connect with an ethernet connection with VM.

    It is possible to connect Linux wirelessly, however it can be a little tricky. Ethernet should be as simple as plug in and go.
    I've just had a look and see that the Asus 701SD is an Eee PC, a quick Google search suggests this might be of use:

    This should talk you through connecting to a wireless network and making the laptop connect automatically every time you turn it on.

    I was trying with a ethernet cable and not wireless but was hoping to use it as a wireless connection later..
    Will get my kids into bed and will try again..
