if they are retiring then the journey should be taken into account - as they get older they won't be capable of driving such long distances, and may want to avoid the M8.

I'd go for the east coast because it's a bit drier, bu the travelling time would put me off. Of course, if you don't want them too close for comfort:p the Monifieth or Carnoustie. both are lovely , just past Dundee, house prices are reasonable and have good transport links and railway stations. They both have good adventure playgrounds for kids too, for when the grandkids come to visit.

http://www.tspc.co.uk/x94482-2-bedroom-Detached-Bungalow-for-sale-in-Monifieth---DD5-4LB is an example of a no stairs home with an extra bedroom for visitors, 10 minutes walk to the seafront.

Broughty Ferry is a more accessible beach, you can walk along the coastal cycle/waling path to get to it (and the Marks and Spencers there too)

North Berwick/Gullane are lovely but pricey. also Port Seton too on the east coast

Agreed - lots of dosh to live in either, grew up in North Berwick in a cooncil hoose but no way could we afford to buy anywhere there these days. Gullane is even more expensive I think. Bit difficult to advise with no idea of a budget from the OP but Dunbar is also not quite so expensive - great beaches and prom walks, John Muir Country Park and its v near A1 and also has a station if trains are an option [not employed by the tourist board honest :D]
  • Look at the Dumfries & Galloway coast (or inland Castle Douglas/Thornhill, or even Annan to Moffat corridor)- very beautiful, small villages and towns and very low crime. M6/M74 easy run to M/well, with much lower prices. And only short drive to Carlisle for escape route!
