external hard disk gone

A while back one many external 120gig 2.5 inch hard disks I had went. Its SATA type.

Basically I managed to "accidently" (thats my excuse) wipe the disk and then went on the long journey of recovering data and while doing that it packed in.

No power going in - checked the case, works fine with other disks - its just the hard disk no longer responding.

All in all I had got back my data by that stage (hard other backups), all except one file.

So is there any way to put some life into the hard disk?

depending on whats happened to the drive and if you're technically confident enough, you could take the platters out and put them in another drive. chances are they will be ruined as when built theyre built in a vacuum environment. I've had a little success in doing it myself but the drive only lasted few days after that before it was unreadable and unusable. Nowt to loose really considering the drive is dead at the mo.

Yeah I was thinking of doing that - need a spare identical drive (cant ruin another one) - lucky it was not an important document.

Do you actually need to get the file back or are you just trying to get the hard dive working again??

Its the file I want, don't care about hard disk - rather it was working than not of course :-)

Its a long story - my eyes were blurry, I was tired and I felt like doing something real stupd and yes I did it AGAIN. There has to be something better than hard disks surely - technology must improve :mad: - might help if the user wasn't such a plonker.

The technology is coming. There are hard dives that are just becoming affordable called Solid state. Similar to USB sticks but hold a large amount of data.

As for getting your data back.. could be tricky...

Can you see the hard drive at all in windows? Im trying to look for the free software I used to use ... will post it here when I find it

Sorry i guess i should ask ... does the hard disk even spin up any more?

Well I say not important - it was just emails I had collated into a .PST file and backed up - nice to have. Ah well.
