High pitch noise

I've been getting a high pitched noise coming from the hard drive tower whenever the computer is under heavy loading such as downloading or burning a dvd or when multiple windows are open. It also causes a lag in viewing whatever is open at the time.

It has been suggested that the motherboard may have worked its way loose but not sure if this is the actual problem and could I do it myself or would I need to get an expert in to do it.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I strongly suspect that it is an early sign of hard drive failure. It may last forever, if you can put up with the noise, or fail tomorrow !. To be safe, I personally would be creating a rescue CD/DVD (if you do not have one already). Also back up all personal files to external media. Ideally, create a harddrive image, replace harddrive, restore image. Good luck

Also forgot to mention, that earlier i was authoring and burning a dvd, while the dvd was burning the high pitched noise got louder and louder and my PC shut down on its own mid-burning, this has never happened before. I turned it back on again and nothing was out of the ordinary.
