Moving house, gas and elec
hi all
Was wondering if you could give me a bit of advice. I am moving next week and am currently with SWALEC. Can I change providers in my new address if I still owe SWALEC money. I owe them a bit and will pay it off but can't do it in full (and the amount they wabnt off me is ridiculous) I really want to avoid a prepayment meter which is what I would have to have if I stay with them. I have checked the new property and SWALEC provide the gas and elec there but I don't want to stay with them. Please help as I am confused if I can switch providers or not

Also thought I would add that I completely know that I owe the money to SWALEC but can't afford to pay them what they want and still cover my gas and eectricity usage. Do you think I should just stay with them and pay it off or no? So confused!0

You can but SWALEC are free to not let you. As it seems the outstanding amount is on the books already you are unlikely to be able to slip out by default (ie where there are underpayments due to estimated bills.)
You can carry your debt forward to your new property with SWALEC. As long as you choose to pay off the debt over one year you will be able to avoid prepayment meters.
If you want to switch providers sooner - pay off the debt sooner.0 -
(If you can't afford to pay it off over one year then you may have to install a prepayment meter. Make sure, if it comes to that, you arrange and agree to it voluntarily rather than having £300 or £400 added to your debt in court fees and locksmiths. And another £300 for a new front door from your landlord.)
Alternatively, just reduce your consumption. And make sure you keep an eye on your meters in your new place.0
