Dilemma: can I sell twice worn coat without drycleaning it first?

Well I have a nice wool coat here, last winters impulse purchase, but just doesn't suit me so I literally only worn it twice. I really try to maintain high-standard when selling on ebay, and obviously always wash clothes before selling unless new, but drycleaning this coat would probably cost..how much, £20 or so? Might outweigh price I'd sell it for in the end. But another side of me bugs me saying you can't sell somthing that was worn(although only twice) and not cleaned..(Trying to wash it is not an option, too heavy and wool would be ruined) If you bought a coat off ebay in the past what was your experience, was it sent drycleaned, was it advertised as such?

  • I'd be tempted to just hang it to air, go over it with a lint roller and give it a bit of a febrezing if there are no marks and you feel you could get away with sending it as is.

I've not bought any wool coats from eBay but have bought a fair amount of clothes. I wash even clothes that arrive laundered, and would probably take a coat to be cleaned before wear if I bought one.

Febreeze is your friend, just not right before you pack it as you don't want it to smell of it. Should be fine anyway if you've only worn it twice.

Without being too gross, you're not going to make a coat dirty from the inside unless you have a major problem with perspiration - especially in just two wearings.

Unless you're been wearing it somewhere unusual (or where people were smoking) it shouldn't smell.

Wrap it carefully in a plastic bag and leave it for a couple of days to see if it develops a smell in an enclosed space.

Given that a coat is not something worn next to the skin I really don't think it's unreasonable not to have it cleaned after just two wearings (unless one was a trek across the Sahara!)
  • Have you got a steam cleaner? Apparently a bit of a blow over with one of those (from a reasonable distance!!) can freshen things up no end.

Do NOT do this if you rally should not get something damp though!!

  • I think it's perfectly reasonable to include the info that it's only been worn twice since being purchased because only a fool or a troublemaker would expect such a barely-worn item to have been dry-cleaned before selling. You could also mention that it hasn't been freshly dry-cleaned for the avoidance of doubt for any complete morons out there. If I saw a lovely coat that I wanted to bid on which hadn't been dry-cleaned it would certainly not put me off. I factor in the dry-cleaning cost as I wouldn't put something on my back without having it done first

If I was buying (and I do, a lot!) I would not expect this to have been dry cleaned, other clothes yes hopefully, but outerwear, especially wool I would not expect it at all.
Go for it op, hope it sells well
Oh, btw, I'd mention worn twice, but leave the dry cleaned part out totally, if it doesn't say it, it hasnt had it and buyers won't think of it, only my opinion of course

  • If you are paying £20 to get a coat dry-cleaned then I would seriously suggest you switch cleaners. £20 is way over the top. Shop around and find a new cleaner.
