Interestingly, I've hunted down the receipt I was given which clearly says, "Total From Customer Today: 153.78, Visa Debit Card - FE: 153.78". It does not contain card details or auth number, but it does show that the transaction was carried out in good faith and I didn't walk out the store having knowingly "stolen" that money.

Do you think that would change things in any way?

I am 99% sure the card would not have been declined since my online banking shows it was used before and after the time on the receipt. My inkling is this is their excuse for the cashier not actually completing the transaction. But I will be asking the travel agent to confirm which bank was used in order for me to check.
In your position, I would send them a copy of the receipt and ask for their evidence of the transaction being declined. Be perfectly polite and make the point that you do not wish to make payment again and subsequently discover that the original payment has merely been delayed and also say that you wish to involve your card company to ensure that the problem is fully resolved. Keep copies, of course.

I can sympathise with the OP here, if i pay for something on my debit card it's because i have the money in my bank at the time and expect them to be efficient enough to take it out, and it would annoy me alot if they called for the money a month later, prob becasuse like OP i wouldn't have £150 in my account all the time, but as others have pointed out it will need to be paid but i would certainly complain about it though.

You'd still have the £150 they didn't charge the first time wouldn't you? (That's a point though, OP, perhaps you should speak to your bank and ask them what happened if you have a recepit slip saying it was debited).
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything
  • Something along this line happened to me in boots where i payed around £28 on a debit card and the system crashed..i could get no reciept so had no proof either way that my account had been debited the SA went out the back to get bthe manager and checked the system and then imformed me that my account had not been debited...I was not happy to pay again incase it had been debited as had no proof either way...i was happy to repay if i could have something in writting just in case the manager saidnot to worry about it then and let me leave with my shopping! She obviously didnt know either great for me i checked and i was not debited!! :)

Id say def get it in writting that u have def not previously paid etc incase it comes out further down the line maybe if u kick up such a fuss they will let u off Good Luck

I think these things are hostage to fortune. If the transaction is just lost in the system and the OP pays by another means, and ultimately the transaction resurfaces, then OP might have a hard job getting a refund.

What would you advise if the OP had been short-changed in a shop which had a sign stating 'please check your change as mistakes cannot later be rectified'?

don't know if that sign has any legal substance...mind you, if I saw that sign in a shop I would assume that they must regularly have problems like this if they felt the need to post such a sign...so I would check...take my time doing it...and ask the staff how they feel with their employer suggesting that their staff may have problems in giving out change....

as regards the original poster...you didn't notice you had a £150 surplus?....you didn't get away with it...they tracked you down....whats your problem?....pay them....although you could claim you handed over cash on the day.
