About to buy a new Honda Civic. Tips on discounts etc

Hi everyone, As the title says I'm looking at buying one of the new Civics. I'm wanting really to buy from a Honda dealer rather than going through one of these car supermarkets but I want to try and get the best deal. I've read up on the new car article but I'm wanting some advice on what (realisticaly I should go in and say I want to pay) should I spec the car out with the extras and then start negotiating a discount or get a discount on the starting price and then add the extras on?

I'm basically wanting to know "how cheeky can I be??" Any tips that I get will be really appreciated. I know which model I want (1.8 ES) and the Extras (I think i want the Car kit and metallic paint).

I've looked at sites such as "What Car" and seen their target price, but I want to know if there are any other ways to get discounts etc.

Many thanks

Good luck with the purchase, Honda engines are bullet proof!! Dont expect too much in the discount area the most they will offer you will either be a better trade in price or a few hundred off the list price. Try and get stuff like the extra insurance that pays out the price paid for the car, the name escapes me at the time of typing!!

You should try some of the online discount places too, most of them you collect your car at the dealer anyway.

And if you do buy your Honda, welcome to the Honda club - 2 years hassle free for me so far... :j

check this site out, Drive The Deal

print off the offer you get from the site and the garage SHOULD try to match. If they will not match it i would go elsewhere

Good luck with getting a discount from a Honda dealer. I've bought my last 2 Honda's from dealers and the most discount I could negotiate was £500 off. Did get free servicing thrown in free. As Honda cars are built to last, you save money in the long run. Must keep them serviced regularly though. Does cost a bit. £280 for my last service which was just a glorified oil and fluid change!! I’ve been trying to get my OH to go for the new Civic ever since I had a test drive. Nice car, but still not as good as my CRV.

why dealer and not car supermarket?
the cars are so much cheaper at those places and some of them will basically negotiate for you and tell you to go a pick up your car from your local dealership.

    1) Find the best internet price for your spec and use that as your target.
    2) Don't let your dealer think you are sold on a Honda - that gives him the upper hand. Tell him the Civic is on your shortlist along with the VW Golf and Focus and that they are doing super deals!
    3) You may as well add in the essential/large extras when negotiating price. Leave out the "nice to have" and small things. These can be deal clinchers to close the deal.
    4) Find more than one Honda dealer to negotiate with.
    5) If the dealer isn't moving enough test him out by breaking off the negotiation to "look at your other options". You don't have to do a deal in one meeting.
Good negotiating really works. I recently bought a Golf 1.6 SE. The dealer said his best price was £500 off the list price. I eventually got £1,800 and he threw in fitted mats to clinch the deal.
    Good luck!
