quickie question

I hope this isn't a silly question. I use an Applemac, and have hundreds of photos and documents that I would like to back-up. What is the cheapest and most efficient way to do this. I didn't want to burn them onto CD's. Can I use a USB?
I do have a USB (that was actually a freebie from OP post!) but nothing happens when I connect it. I assume it is incompatible. Are all USB universal or would I need to get one thats MAC specific?

Doyou mean an external USB drive or a pendrive/usb stick. The cheapest would be to use an external drive (firewire or usb). From what I remember from using Macs quite a while ago is that you need to format the external drive in FAT32.0
