NTL won't let me downgrade

I'm on NTL's freedom package with free evening/weekend calls. This is the now discontinued package that goes through my BT line with CPS for the phone calls.
Having just bought an Orchid dialler I figured I would downgrade my account to only broadband and use 1899 for my phone calls or maybe Primus later. I phoned NTL, they said I could change to a broadband only package but it would enter me into a new 12 month contract.
I don't want the hassle of being tied to NTL for another 12 months so I just said I'm not interested in another 12 months contract and he immediatly said "So you'll want to cancel then?"!! I said I'd think about it and phone back although I probably won't go to the hassle of finding another broadband provider just to save a few quid.
Is there any way to get rid of the Evening & Weekend calls free charge without another 12 month contract? Would I get any luck if I said I wanted to cancel?
I checked the T&C and it looks to me like I could have downgraded during the first 12 months but after then I'm unable to downgrade, although it says I may terminate any of the "Services", which looks like I can just say I want to cancel the telephone Service?
I might just phone up and tell them I'm thinking of cancelling and moving to Tiscali or something, see if they offer me the same price. But, is it likely that they'll do this without entering me into a new 12 month contract?
