Gave it a go, but no joy
I think i need to run anti virus software but am not sure how to do it by downloading prog to memory stick from another laptop. Avast comes up with an error, AVG files seem to be on the laptop but i can't see how to run it0 -
best start up in safe mode with networking....does that show a low-res desktop ?? If so, then you should be able to go from there..........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

Tried in safe mode - the only way I can access anything is crtl alt delete and then then new task from the file menu - safe mode won't let me install any new software.0

Another google Upon start up only my wallpaper shows. There are no icons, no task bar, no start menu, nothing, just a blank screen .
I read many posts related to the topic and eventually did the following:
1. booted up to windows
2. ctrl+alt+del to get windows task manager
3. File, new task, typed regedit, clicked ok
4. go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current
Version\Image File Execution Options\
5. In there I had an explorer.exe folder that I deleted (you may have an
entry in the root of the Image File folder as well.. delete them also).
6. Rebooted and everything was back to normal.
7. Breathed a sigh of relief.0 -
Hi thanks for trying to help. I thought you may have got the soloution as I followed the instructions.
Unfortunately there is no explorer.exe folder at the location, so I came to a halt0 -
If you can somehow download and run this before detailed below it may fix your run time errors.Nothing to lose now.
SearingWolfe suggested the following for those that cannot find explorer.exe in the registry. I do not know if it works or is an appropriate solution. Good luck.
EVERYONE THERE IS A MUCH EASIER SOLUTION!! I found that i did not have explorer.exe in the registry, and I have the same problem. When i log on, i can only see my wall paper. Here's the solution. Do a Ctrl+Alt+Delete and look in the process tab. click image name to organize it in alphabetical order. you will see explorer.exe somewhere in there. Click it and click End Process at the bottom right. If you do not see explorer.exe then skip this step. Now click the Applications tab and you will see 3 buttons at the bottom called End Task, Switch To, and New Task. Click New Task. A small window will open up that says Create New Task. In the white bar type in explorer.exe and you will have your desktop back. Sadly, you will have to do this every time you log on, if you have a system restore point before this desktop problem, then do a system restore.0 -

defo a virus or corrupt OS. I vote for a reinstall. Hopefully you can get the docs off.
you could try doing a repair with the windows CD, this will load all the files needed for the OS but if its a virus causing the problem it is likely (very likely) it will happen again.0
