Contact the police ASAP, with any details she can. Even if she can give the colour, type or even the first couple of letters/numbers in the reg, it is a help to finding who it was!!!

If you don't ask, you don't find out!

I think there is an uninsured loass motor bureau thing. Your insurance premium pays a small amount into this for just such occasions. this is a PDF which means you need Adobe Acrobat reader to look at it:
    http://www.mib.org.uk/NR/rdonlyres/3A0950CE-1C0F-4E3A-B370-B4790D681921/40/UninsuredappForm1.pdf
    here is their site
    http://www.mib.org.uk/Default.htm
"MIB was established in 1946 as a private company limited by guarantee for the purpose of entering into Agreements with the Government to compensate the victims of negligent uninsured and untraced motorists. Every insurer underwriting compulsory motor insurance is obliged, by virtue of the Road Traffic Act 1988, to be a member of MIB and to contribute to its funding"
HWTHMBO claimed off this when someone knocked him off his 'bike and drove off - this was maybe 3 years ago.
Were there any CCTV camera anywhere that might have caught the incident on film - there seems to be loads of them CCTVs about nowadays so you might just have some luck.
How about a poster up near where it happened asking witnesses to call the police with what they saw. If you have reported it to the Police they may put boards out - these are usually for a 'FATACC' though. But you will have ref number for witnesses to quote.
    Good Luck

This from the MIB sister site MIIC
"The UK has one of the worst records in Western Europe for uninsured driving with an estimated one in every twenty cars on the road being driven without proper insurance cover. This results in every honest motorist in the UK paying £15 - £30 of their insurance premium to compensate the innocent victims of these cheats... and the problem is growing at a dramatic rate."

So chances are that the driver wasn't insured and that's why they scarpered!

  • The number of drivers who have bought their licences abroad is also increasing thereby adding to the danger on our roads.

Of course, you can't say anything as this would be xenophobic (at best).

Has she got legal cover through the insurance? Worth speaking to them ASAP if yes.

Did she get much detail about the car that drove off (and/or the driver)?

The police are unlilely to get anywhere, but your insurers won't want to have to pay out when it wasn't your fault so may be able to trace them and organise a "solicitors" letter to be written to the last known keeper. Just a thought.

MIB won't help in terms of the damage to the car as this is insured by her own insurer. MIB would be able to help if there was any personal injury I believe.

If the hit and run driver cannot be traced then her own insurer will pay and she will lose her XS and NCD. She still needs to claim on her own insurance though and hope that the other party can be traced and more importantly will pay for the damage.

If she has the reg number of the vehicle, then her own insurer / legal advisers will be able to trace it via the DVLA.
