I bought a DS Lite in April for my 8 year old's birthday and he has used it on a daily basis, a few days ago we noticed that it had a hairline crack on the right hand side, yesterday it completely snapped and stopped working.

I've contacted Nintendo and they are offereing repair at a cost of around £55, I wondered if there was a cheaper way of getting it repaired. My sons friend also has a DS Lite and a hairline crack is appearing on his, I have tried to research the problem and most of the information is a year old and alot of people have had smilar problems.

Any help info is appreciated, thanks

£55? Better off buying a new one!

We had a DS lite fixed via an ebay store/trader. They quote for the work before hand and if you accept you send it registered etc.

Ours was a replacement game slot. Came back working fine.

Check for the UK repairers with high feedback if you go down this route but lots cheaper than £55!

Ours ended up getting traded in for a DSi at GAME where they gave us £50!

Thanks will have a look :)
  • If it is a common problem you may be able to argue with Nintendo that it is a design/manufacturing fault and should be repaired for free under the sale of goods act? Or you could take it up with the retailer as they are liable as the seller.

If you search on the internet you will see this is a very common problem, although Nintedo try to claim it isn't. In fact, the first batch of white one in the US had such common hinge breakages they were repaired for free.
Nintendo have sent me a bill for my daughter's red DS Lite hinge repair. It is 10m old, and as far as I'm concerned, it's in warranty. They want £54. I'm trying to fight it out at the moment.

That has just happened to my pink DS lite, and I'm sending it off to Nintendo but the guy on the phone told me there is no design flaw on the DS when clearly there is!! Any way of getting them to repair it for free? Because I don't see why I should pay them another £55 for something that's lasted 8months and NOT been dropped!
