Flashing at me means I have to quickly reasses the whole situation and by that time the flasher may have changed his mind when i decide to turn.

Really you should only flash a pedestrian if they step out in front of you,

until they step out and flashing before that may make them think it is OK to cross.

Doing that is exactly how I ended up on this silly register!!!

I do flash my lights now and then for example i flash my lights at an oncoming car to tell them to come through 2 parked cars where its that possible for 2 cars to pass through(its only a minor road anyway), i know its dangerous but how else am i meant to indicate to the other driver to pass through,

you don't...you drive straight down the center so there is no doubt of your intentions.

If they do the same, then you stare them out, and if one of you doesn't given in...well

Seriously though, obstruction on your side of the road, you give way, people again assume the vehicle coming the other way is going to drive in the gutter so you have more room. Hold your road position so there is no doubt.

I must admit if you flashed at me in broad daylight I would have the police on you for exposing yourself :rotfl:

30 years of driving, No Points
30 years of driving, No at Fault Accidents

    Care to divulge?

I'm not disputing that your technically correct. We agree. We could also talk about custom and practice in meeting an oncoming vehicle at a cross roads each wanting to turn right.
    I will divulge..certainly...

Have held a full motorcycle licence for about 28 years.
Car licence for about 27 years.
I have a nice clean licence
    no accidents,no points

I think motorcycle training and riding stands any driver in good stead.
I drive a small commercial vehicle every day at work day and night.

  • what exactly were you warning this other driver of by flashing them ?

the only time i see flashes used properly is to tell people of a speed trap ahead (Warning them of it)
and technically thats not right. lol

When I falsh my headlights it means a warning

Are you sure that's what it means? Let's see what the highway code says.
Flashing headlights. Only flash your headlights to let other road users know that you are there. Do not flash your headlights to convey any other message or intimidate other road users.

See, you've yourself gone against the highway code and tried to convey a message that it isn't safe to cross. I know that sounds pedantic but flashing your headlights isn't to do this any more than it is to instruct other drivers that you're giving way. It's only to let other drivers or pedestrians know you are there, and they can make a decision as how to continue.

For example, if a driver wants to give way on a road where no driver has priority. A flash of the head lights can let the other driver you are there. That driver can then proceed based on the fact that you're staying stationary.

i have been in the situation of someone flashing me and i misunderstood .. i was leaving work and the t- junction i was turning right at a man in an old white car flashed his lights at me - he was moving slowly just having come off a traffic lighted junction himself .. i moved out and wham!! strait into me!! there was a police car behind him and apparently he was trying to warn me of the fact the police car was there!! he was trying it on his car was worth more written off then in its current state once i had said to the policeman in the car behind he flashed me and i thought he was letting me through - he admitted he did flash me .. i got my car repaired on insurance - he did not!! police believed he was trying to get book value on a knackered 3rd party insured unroadworthy car - just p'd offhe tried it on with me as i was going to visit my best friend in hospital and missed visiting hours due to the fallout!!
