Canceling a gym membership that is held with a membership management company.

Does anyone have any advice on how I can get out of a 3 year gym contract. The contract is held with a membership management company and is direct debit. I have seen that people have used fake doctors notes before. I rang the company and told them i was advised not to train on medical grounds and they said if I can supply them with a doctors note they can cancel. Do these notes work? Are they safe to send to a management company? HELP Please!!!!!!!
