Scrapping a car

Posted a thread the other day about being on the lookout for another car as my Mondeo has given me nothing but grief for the 2 months I have had it. The Car is a 2001 petrol 1.8 LX.

Well now the fuel pump has gone on it and it is stuck at my in-laws

So I've decided to cut my losses as there are a few other niggly issues and I can see myself shelling out more than the car is worth!

My options are.....

- Phone up one of these, we buy your car for cash places and try and get a few quid back.
- Get a tow home then fire it on my driveway and stick it up on Ebay as spares/repairs to try and get some cash.
- Phone one of the places that will uplift for free, although no cash for me that way!

Anyone scrapped a car recently got any advice? I have had a couple of folks tell me to put it through the auctions but I have far too much of a consience to see it end up with some poor genuine family like what happened to me!

Cheers

...or you could replace the fuel pump (from a scrappy) and then sell it?
  • get a fuel pump, get it fixed flog it for what its worth, scrapping that would be criminal!

ebay breaking is good, but to get rid of all the good bits will take time, and you probably dont want bits of car hanging about for too long!

I could do, but its a garage job to fix as the fuel tank needs to be removed so I dont want to go messing about with that.

Again its a garage job and I'm thinking why chuck £X at the car when £X can go towards a different more reliable car.

The ebay option is not for me to break it up, I was going to just say the buyer would have to tow it away. I've checked and there are already 2 or 3 similar adverts.

In my experiience removing and replacing a fuel tank is not a big job.

To be honest I dont think I would feel too confident taking that on.

Just spoke to the garage just now and he estimated £300-£400 to supply and fit the pump. Its just not wrth my while for a £900 car.

I have no idea how the guys that sell cars like these sleep at night

What is the mileage and your honest appraisal of the car's condition? It could be worth twice that amount, if what I have seen at auction today is anything to go by.
By the way, I am not a trader, but I also own a 1.8 Mondeo Verona, and it is better than a lot of the more expensive cars which I have owned.
    Think again!

Mileage is around 97K and my honest opinion, erm, I had better not swear :D

Bodywork has a lot of scratches, bit of rust but could be done up given a bit of time (which I was going to do).
Interior was a mess of dog hairs and a few fag burns. Gave it a very good hoover, replaced the gaiter and generally made it look a lot nicer but still not ideal.
Engine is missing when I go to accelerate. It was diagnosed as the EGR valve so off I went and got a 2nd hand one off ebay, fitted it myself and hey presto car was working nicely! Then I realised oil was about dry and I had no leaks on the driveway. Turns out its burning oil and now I can see the smoke from the back as I'm looking for it. Its also currently failing its emissions test and I've been advised that may be the CAT and the Oxygen sensor.

I took it from Edinburgh to Oban and back yesterday not stopping off (Apart from in Oban). On the way up car was going well, was working well for overtaking. On the way back the old problems started again that I had thought was the EGR. I stopped in west Edin to pick up my son at the in-laws and had left the car for 20 mins. When I went to start it fired into life, then died on me. After three hours of the RAC guy looking at it for me and trying lots of things to get it going it just want happening and he diagnosed it as the fuel pump.

I'm now resigned to the fact that some guy has sold me a turkey . The thing is I could probably get the pump fixed for less than the £400 and sell it on but I would feel so guilty for the next owner. I think its time to cut my losses, £925 down the drain. Hopefully the young lad who sold it to me had a nice wee time with his profit he made on it. I'm a great believer in Karma so I'm sure if he continues selling on cars with problems he will get his commupance one day.

It was in that condition when you bought it... I would have run a mile from it.

Sounds like it has been a mini-cab to me...
