AT the post office how much do you say the item is worth?

I have just started selling a few small things on ebay and posted them off. So far, so good.

However, when I go to the post office, they always ask me the value of the contents and I never know what to answer.
I get proof of postage so I can claim from Royal Mail should the item not be delivered, but I never know if they need a value then and there to record it.

What do you say your items are worth?

Ours don't ask for a value of the item, just if it is over £39 in order to sell you the higher postage rate to cover it.

I hope that isn't going to be rolled out across all the PO's, as that will get very annoying, very quickly!!!

I would just say a few quid if they ask again! (unless it is over £39 and you would benefit from sending it a different method)

Just say £38. There is no arguement then!
  • Never actually been asked how much an item's worth at my post office- they just ask if there's anything of value in it, and the answer's always no. :)

They're probably trying to help you out.
Once the value goes over a certain figure (£36, I think?) you should be sending the item Special Delivery. If you send an expensive item via standard mail, you're going to lose out if it goes missing.
My guess is they're just trying to help you make sure you're using the correct postal method.
    My TV is broken!

I always take a few things with me and i can never remember which is which item so like said above i just say £36 or £38, if ones worth more and needs special delivery or more insurance i make a note on it in pencil.

In the old days with the old recorded slips i would write the value on the back my self.
