Laptop has died - help please!

Hi all

My laptop appears to have given on me. When I switch it on, the “on” light comes on, but the computer doesn’t actually boot up (it makes less noise that it did before, and nothing comes up on screen). The on switch has to be held down continuously for about 15-20 seconds to switch it on as well.

Also, it will only power on if the power lead is plugged in, yet if once on the power lead is removed, it stays on.

My IT guy at work has taken a look at it, and has advised me that the system board has gone.

My questions are:
1) Is the system board the same as the motherboard
2) Where can I get a new system board? (I have tried goggling, as has my IT guy, but aren’t getting much success

The model number for the system board (I am told) is 8050QDA.

The laptop is about 3½ years old, and was from the now defunct Evesham Technologies.

Any advise of help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Shane

that system board is the motherboard , you may be lucky to find a new one/2nd hand one on ebay but the time/cost of replacing would probably outweigh buying a Laptop (if you don't fit it yourself)

edit , just looked on ebay and only broken laptop has pwer problems ( probably same fault)

    Thanks Browntoa

Talking to PC World today, they seem to think I should be able to get a different motherboard that would be compatible - but where do I start? How will I know what is compatiable?

As for cost - it will only be the unit cost of the motherboard, as my IT department at work have said they will fit it for me (for the :money:bargain :money:cost of a bottle of wine!)

So surely a replacement motherboard + a bottle (even case!) of wine would be much cheaper than a new laptop!

I don't know your specific model of laptop, but I would guess that there is no chance of finding a different motherboard that would be compatible. Every external connection would have to be in exactly the same place, and laptop boards aren't standardised in that way.

IMO you would be better off trying to find out what other make/models were fitted with your system board and find a secondhand non-working (e.g. broken screen) one of those on Ebay.

It's probably not going to be worth the aggravation for a 3 1/2 year old laptop.
