Meter madness

The gas meter was changed 9/12/2003. I was then with British gas. Assume that the new one was set at 0000. When I changed to another supplier they refused to accept the reading and said they would use the previous figures used by British gas. The changover figure was 5315. I had my suspicions and sure enough when the meter reader finally arrived confirmed that according to his hand held computer I still had the OLD meter. No record exists that the meter was ever changed and I was being billed on the old meter. Where now? This is almost six years. He said that it was an old Linear meter and the new one a metric one.
My question is have I been overpaying or underpaying - the impression I get from my new supplier who have now admitted the fault is that I have been over paying. Any advice much appreciated.

You are likely to have been over paying unless the account has been estimated.

Hi Alrobbo - On your old Cube Foot meter you were charged app 31.5Kw for each unit the meter recorded, which at todays prices is roughly £1.34. On your Metric meter it's app 11.1Kw which is roughly 47pence
It's a puzzle as to why BG were accepting meter readings of only 4 figures when they had the meter listed as the Cube Foot type, but your salvation is the old bills. Write to both BG and the new supplier heading the letter COMPLAINT asking for copies of all bills from Dec 03, (they have to supply them), any of these bills that show app 31.5Kw being charged for each meter unit is wrong
In the meantime if you have your last 4 bills, apply the 11.1Kw figure to the units used and adjust your Direct Debit payment accordingly
    Good Luck
