techie help pls to get me connected

Where to start? right i have been having a number of problems with my computer lately so i went to reinstall windows xp to fix any problems i had but it would not do it because it said the os is newer than the one your trying to install that must be because i have upgraded to sp3 from sp2 on my disk yes (haha well on my way now to becoming the oldest techie apprentice in the world) so temper took over and i decided to do a full fomatt  not a good idea because now i cant connect my pc to the net not even a flicker on my netgear modem. Just incase you are wondering i have borrowed a wireless laptop and that is working in my house on my modem Process of elimination means there is nothing wrong with the old but trusty netgear. So thats as far as my techie knowledge goes so i am desperate for more help b4 my friend charges me rental for this laptop.
The solving of a problem lies in finding the solvers.

How are you trying to connect your PC to the router? Ethernet or wireless adapter? What error messages are you getting? More info needed.

Open Device Manager, (Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware) and take a look at any yellow exclamation marks. These signify hardware on your PC for which the drivers are not installed or XP has a problem with the driver(s).
