Talk Talk Essentials

Recently got a letter from Talk Talk saying that I was being "moved" to the Talk Talk Essentials package - not asking if I would like to be moved.
This new package will cost me an extra £6.49 a month for no extra benefit, will have a on-off £29.99 connection fee and 18 months minimum term.
I don't use a home phone at all, and just have my phone line for internet use. At the moment I'm paying BT for line rental, but Talk Talk have said I have to pay them instead.
How can Talk Talk do this - force me into an 18 month contract without geting my agreement or even asking for my consent?
All I want to do is just stay exactly how I am - line rental from BT and broadband from Talk Talk.
I also got a letter from BT offering me a line rental package from them, which includes free calls, but I need to agree to a 12 month contract.

There's a thread about this already - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1863841
It appears to be a (probably unenforceable) arrogant attempt by Talk Talk to increase income and, not surprisingly, Talk Talk company representative has failed to answer (in fact, has failed to post anything for the past 8 days) questions from customers on there and other threads.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
I genuinely think this needs reporting to the regulator. In fact, I'm going to email them now.Call me Carmine....
HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??0 -
Thanks Heinz - I didn't realise that it would apply to other people too - I should have done a search
- hopefully a Board Guide will merge.
Strange that if it is a widespread change, that Martin Lewis hasn't made any comment on it, yet seemingly allows a representative of the company to post on the forum.
Good idea Carminestocky - seems like the regulator's the way to go on this one.0 -
Had a look on the Ofcom website and, surprise surprise, "Ofcom does not investigate individual consumer complaints and we will not respond to you about your individual complaint." So that's alright then, Talk Talk can just do what they want.
Look's like the only course of action is to sign up to another supplier like BT for a 12 month period.0 -

Thanks Brian - I'll give it a go - I don't know how they can (or think they can) get away with changing essential elements of a contract like this just to suit themselves.0
