How much to charge at a car boot sale??

Hi, I'm taking all of my baby's outgrown clothes to a car boot at the weekend and have no idea what to charge!

Can anyone give me an idea of what people are prepared to pay please?? I've got loads of stuff that I need to get rid of, but some of it is in fantastic condition, so I don't want to almost give it away, but on the other hand I don't want it to come back home with me!! I've got things like babygrows, vests, trousers, tops, 2 piece sets and a few jackets and coats.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi - I've sold baby clothes at car boot before. At the beginning I was asking 2-3.00 for jackets and coats and 1.00 each for everything else. I've also done "1.00 each or 3 for 2.50". As the day goes on or if nothing is shifting I drop everything down to 50p and then if necessary and I'm happy to do so down to 20p each!!
  • Hi, I wouldnt pay £3 for a baby coat at a boot sale as there are hindreds of other people selling for pennies. Car boot sales make me really tight as I know how much I sell my things for and what I can buy it for from other people.

I wouldnt pay more than a pound per item and for that it would have to be as new or new and a very good make, I wouldnt pay a pound for Next clothes. Vests I would pay 20p.

I think the most I have paid is £2 for a Monsoon winter coat (lucky find...and didnt even haggle)

Its not just me....I think you will find most people wont want to pay much, especially with baby clothes as aslmost every stall sells them.

Baby clothes are the one thing i dontt take as they go for so little and its unecomonical for me to fit them in the car when I can get more saleable things in.

I am in Yorkshire if that helps and have found most boot sales around here virtually the same. Maybe its different in different parts of the country.

    Good luck.

vests 20p, babygros 30p, tops or bottoms 50p, sets or dresses and coats £1 (if youre lucky)

You really do get a pittance for baby clothes, as there are so many people selling it, and tbh clothing has really come down in price in the shops, so its not like you paid alot for it in the first place

Even name brand stuff goes for low prices - i had a girls Monsoon dress, and knowing carboot prices, i wanted £1 for it. It didnt sell. i even had one woman say 'you do know its a kids dress'

Tbh, where babys clothes are concerned, if you want to feel you get some worth out of them, give them to charity, or find a local school/playgroup that collects clothing to sell, or give them to a welfare/homeless/young mums place - rather than the  feeling you get at carboots, because people are so picky. I know id rather give them to someone who needs them, rather than someone at a carboot whos not prepared to pay 20p for a bnwt pack of vests

  • How about trying an NCT sale? The National Childbirth Trust have nearly new sales all accross the country so check out their website for the next one near you. Some do indoor table top sales or others ask you to price up the clothes and they sell them for you at a commission. In our area they are every March and October so you may have to wait but you will get a lot more for your clothes than at a car boot. I often buy bits at car boots and sell them at my next NCT sale to make a bit of profit! Good luck whatever you decide!

Buy a lot of kids stuff at boot sales and prices are vary variable.

Some people ask far too much and end up taking it all home again.
In terms of labels it splits into 3 main groups.

Pumpkin Patch, Prada, Osh Kosh or anything else rare or designer.
Then Next, Gap, Adams, Baby Rocha etc ie Good solid high street brands
Then Cherokee, Asda or anything supermarket or cheap.

The top group can sometimes ask for silly prices but to be honest they then dont sell so will not really pay more than a quid an item (occasionally £2 if its something really nice).

The second group - 50p to £1 an item - may pay more for something special like a gap classic hooded top but thats the exception to the rule and often will pick these up for 20p each an item.

    Third group 20p each max.

In my experiece men sell the stuff a lot cheaper than women as they are not emotionally attached to the items and they are not thinking that cost £14 new and has never been worn.

Kids stuff at boot sales there is always more supply than demand and there is no profit to be made by reselling on ebay so its pretty cheap. Several resellers for stairgates, toys cots, buggys etc but the clothes have minimal resale value.

    Cheers
  • I buy childrens clothes at boot sales, i pay 50p-2.00 per item mainly for Next, Gap and Boden.

I don't think people will pay much for small baby clothes 0-12 months as there child will only wear it a couple times.
