Making a cell longer (not wider) in Excel

Options
Is it possible to make a cell longer, ie have two or more lines in each cell of a column? If so, how do I do it?!

For example when producing a breakdown of costs I want the first column to be the item number; the second column to give a description of the particular item like: Furniture, to include 2 No tables, 8 No chairs, 1 No fridge, 3 No bar stools (this is where my question comes in); the third column costs to us; fourth column cost to client.

It's probably quite a fundamental thing to do but I can't find any info on it in any books. Thanks in advance.

  • I presume you are using Excel? select the cells you wish to change and go to the 'Format menu', then 'Row' then select 'height' changing that figure will give you a taller cell.

If I have understood you correctly, you want to be able to list things in column 2?

In that case if you use Alt + Enter, it will give you a second line in the same cell. So you have Item 1 (Alt+Enter) then on the next line you can put (Item 2 (Alt+Enter) and so on.

If that is not what you want, then can you explain again, perhaps setting out on here what you want it to look like. Alternatively, someone a bit brighter than me might be along soon.

I'm not 100% sure what you're after here, but I think you want to wrap the text:

    Format cell
    Click "Alignment" tab
    Check "Wrap text" box

This will make the text continue onto a second line without widening the cell. It will increase the height instead.

Is that what you're after?
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

That would certainly work if the text is required to be continuous and not a vertical list.

Thanks for your replies. I've been out for a few hours so have only just seen them. This is what I'm trying to achieve:

    Col 1 Col 2 Col 3 Col 4
1 Furniture to include 1 No table,
4 No chairs, 1 No bar stool, 1 No
    fridge. £ £

    2 Floorcovering, beech effect vinyl
    floor with company logo stripped
    in. £ £

    3 etc etc

I usually produce this in Word but want to be able to automatically total the figures in each column. So can I do it and which method? Thanks.

I think you need the Alt+Enter technique described in Post #3. That lets you enter multiple lines in a cell: select a cell, start typing the text, press Alt+Enter for a new line, type more text, press Alt+Enter for the next line, etc.

Thanks again. I've just noticed that my example came out completely wrong for some reason! It was supposed to be in four columns. I will try the solutions suggested.
