It pays to challenge

  • It usually takes about 3 weeks for the payments to start. You can phone the Job Centre helpline and ask them to process it quicker if you are struggling - this worked for me

It will depend how busy the processing centre in your area is.
The official clearance target to award the claim online is 12 working days from the date of claim (when you made your first phone call) plus the time to release the payment so you are looking at a min of 3 weeks from the claim date even when things were normal.
If the award is on when you signed they would have been able to insert the signing date online and the payment would release and land about 3 working days later. IE Mon sign, paid into bank thurs. However if the award has not been done yet (likely not as they are so busy at the mo) it will only release after the award is done.
However as the JC can't add the signing date until after the award is done, the processing centre would need to ring the JC after the award is done to get them to insert the date you signed, otherwise it will not release until after you next sign on.

This is the joys of the crap computer systems the government have put in place. There are separate systems at the JC and for the benefit payment, and a separate one for the application. There are supposed to be some links, but they don't always work.

Have you had an award notice yet? Once you have that you could ring to check if your payment has been released.

    good luck

When you say backdated, do you mean you applied to be backdated or was it actually allowed at the JC. Quite often they will allow a backdate to the sat from the mon (which is what I assume you did) at the JC automatically in which case the date of claim would be treated as 1st Aug.
If you apply for backdating (this would be on a seperate form) this has to go for a separate decsion which can add a week on to the process.

Say your claim date is 1st Aug, the official target to clear the claim award online (not to pay you) would expire on 19th Aug. The official line is to process all claims in date order so it all depends on how busy the area you sign on is as to if they hit this.

To hit the official target they would have to have your award online by 19th Aug. If they get the signing date put on correctly by the JC your payment should hit by the following Mon ie 24th. But if they don't do this it wouldn't release till you next sign.
Have you had an award notice through the post yet? If you have and the money doesn't land on Mon ring them up.
I suspect the award has not yet been done, so its your call if you ring them next week or hang on. They may be able to give you an idea of when the award will be done/how busy they are. The only trouble is the more calls they get the more the work gets delayed.

I have worked in a processing centre a few years ago and it is hard as you want to get claims paid ASAP, but when there is work everywhere and call after call it is challenging to say the least. We were told to only process in date order, and you get call after call where people say I am desperate for the money, even if you believe them all you can only physically clear so many a day. I sometimes used to go home wondering about the people I had spoken to and hoping there were ok, but it was hard. If you promise to pay 10 people what do you say to the 11th.

Blxxdy GB, when I started a few years ago we cleared 97% of claims within a working week, so most were paid as soon as they signed on. Then GB decided to slash staff and cut offices. There was more and more work with no more staff.
At least now they are recruiting more staff and as these feed through things should improve. The trouble is the training is so long winded, you are't classed as fully trianed and a benefit "expert" as they class it till you have done a year.

Hope you get things sorted soon, and maybe your money will appear on Mon.
    good luck

  • You have to wait a bout a month for your first full payment.

I had my first meeting on Jul 29th. My 2 week cycle ended on Jul 31. Today i had my two week appointment and was told I had been paid £18.30 (period 29 to 31 Jul) so my first full fortnightly JSA will be Paid on the 28th Aug (this will be for the period 01 to 14 Aug).

Not heard about the backdated stuff, apparantly they will send a letter ...
