I believe that the staff are able to use a pseudonym, that they must inform their manager of, however, that said they cannot change the name they have chosen

I deal with the CSA at Hastings and they have always told me their full names. I find it more friendly and I also know it is definitly them when they phone me.

Working in a call centre we can have a "pseudo" surname. Mostly to given out if your felt that their was any real threat you. i.e you p*ss someone off on the phone and you walk out of the building to find them standing with a machete asking everyone if they know who such and such is. (bit OTT but you get the jist)
Normally providing them with a first name and team number is ok but if they push we need to supply a surname. Dunno why the CSA would be any different but then again I dont know anything about them.
All calls should be recorded tho so take the time and date for your records.
Any yeah the details are probably all stored on a database/record type thing so that when you call the advisor can automatically see your details and info about previous calls.

When I worked at the DWP we were told we could use either our first name or mrs/mr xxx
to greet the person, but if they insisted on a full name you had to give it. Certain people, those with rare surnames, visiting officers, those who wanted to be careful, could have a Pseudonym. Usually things like colours.

We got threatened ALOT, one guy told me he would be waiting outside with a baseball bat for me. Nice. When I asked him how he would know what I looked like he hung up.
We had a good manager who used to get the lads to walk with you across the road at night as we worked in a really rough area.
So I can see why the CSA staff are wary, but you do get a bit hardened to it, and we had safety training. Then again it is reasonable you give people enough info so if they need to get back in touch at a future date they can get hold of you again
The line in recent years in all departments is a push towards centralisation and no personal responsibility for cases. Bad news in my opinion, if you know certain cases are yours alone and any mistakes will come to you, you concentrate harder and do a better job. Common sense really. This attitude is from the top.

if they refuse to give their full name I would refuse to speak to them - if they are doing their job properly they should have nothing to hide - if you needed to complain about a certain CSA worker how could you do that without their full name and title?

When I was there we were TOLD we HAD to give our full names (either real or fictional but which was official and therefore traceable) - it was a disciplinary matter if we refused.

Really! Shame they dont use it then and start at teh top and work their way down as they are or should all be up on disiplinary hearings. Oh yes but that would mean that they would not have anyone to work there!
  • You cannot take legal action against an individual for something they have done in the course of their employment. They act for and on behalf of the secretary of state. If you wish to take legal action against someone for something they have done in the course of their employment, it is the department you take action against, and they in turn can take action against their employee if the employee acted against the law.
