£1000 - what would you do?

I've got £1000 that I'd like to 'invest' - by that I mean forget about for a year or 2 and come back to more than £1000, lol!

What's the best thing to do with it? I don't mind minimal risk but I'd like to make sure I don't actually come out with less than putting it in a biscuit tin.

I've also just bought my council house so home improvements is another way I'm willing to go with this money - we're planning to sell after 3 years.

Add to this the fact that I'm just starting my own business so if I get no better ideas it will go on promotions and advertising :-/

Thanks in advance!

Premium bonds? You'll get your money back, you may win the big one and it's tax free.
  • Hmmm - that's maybe an idea.

Everyone should have a little in premium bonds, I recall a few  months ago someone winning £1 million and they only had £6 worth of bonds ! Admittedly they had held them for over 40 years.

Heres hoping the ernie comes calling in the new year ;)

I'd say a fixed rate bond. Just bung it in and forget.

Look at teletext BBC2 page 255/256 I think, gives best rates. Or there are lots places on line to get best rates of interest. If you dont have any other savings go for a Cash ISA as these are tax free. Or premium bonds is my fav for a small amout to forget about.

    ;D
I am NOT a mortgage & insurance adviser - or anything to do with finance, that was put on by the new system I dont know why?!

I keep about 1.5% of my liquid assets in premium bonds, i.e. if they win they win if they don't they don't  - So far theyve provided a return of about 2%. but theres always the CHANCE of a win :),

So basically your gambling your interest on winning a small amount probably 2% or less, with a chance of a bigger win which would more than make up for the x number of years of below par performance ....... if it happens ;)

Anyway you get a bit of excitement at the start of each month :)

Put your bond holder number into the natinal savings website, then hit the button, cover the screen up with your hands, slowly removing your fingers as the butterflys in your stomach increase, to see if YOUVE WON BIG, okay to see if youve WON ANYTHING !!!!  ;D

This months numbers should pop up on wednessday.....  :o
  • I would put it into Alliance and Leicester, which pays a lot more than the average account. Then I would open an account with the Halifax, pay £250 a month until the money runs out, then drop the standing order to £25 a month for the rest of the time.
