UPVC external door mahogany coating peeling

I've got a UPVC external door which has a dark mahogany coating applied to it. Some of this has started to peel and flake off after years of typical Scottish winters. It looks really bad with the white UPVC showing in patches. I've searched google for a DIY solution to the problem but haven't found anything. The guarantee on the doors has long since expired so I cant go back to the company who installed. Trying to avoid the expense of getting a new door so does anyone out there have an answer as to how to fix this as I assume it must be a recurring problem?
Anyone working in the double glazing industry have any advice

Any help gratefully accepted

  • There isnt a solution im afraid .Is this on the panel or on the frame and sash (ie the panel is inset into the sash and held in with beads )You could try cutting the area what is peeling with a sharp knife then painting with car paint suitable for car bumpers you can get small pots you may be able to get a couple slightly different shades the apply the dark grain with marker pen.

I would not advise using " car paint " on uPVC, it could well react and melt it, I would suggest using normal gloss or even varnish to attempt a match to the original.

A6 is right, there are paints for PVC.

RAYMAN2112 it sounds like the panel is delaminating, it IS possible to buy a new panel (may look fresher than the door sash/frame) but it wont cost anything like the cost of a new dooor and is DIY if you cabn source the panel direct

Just needs cutting the same size as the last one, itting the letter box, and toe/heeling the panel and refitting the beads

Buying quality goods which last, should be an investment that saves money. :T
Buying cheap products which fail, wastes money and costs twice as much in the long run.

  • Thanks for the replies - doesn't sound like theres a quick fix. I've tried a UPVC undercoat on a small patch and brushed on a dark mahogany stainer which after a couple of coats is not bad albeit a bit brighter than the rest of the door. I'll investigate the replacement panel and bumper paints options before I go any further with my stainer.

Any other thoughts out there, please add them and I'll keep checking the thread.
    Cheers

Thanks for link - had a look on website but not sure what their kit is. Can you give me the name of their product and is it easy to apply and decent match for a dark mahogany? Sorry about all the questions but my DIY skills are basic but I can follow instructions pretty well!
    Thanks
