Cabin beds/midi sleepers

  • Thanks to both of you.

I had thought about a bunk bed with the beds running at 90 degree angles, debtfreein4years, but hadn't been able to find anything (like yourself) - but I hadn't thought of adding a single bed to a high sleeper or asking someone to adapt normal bunk beds. A great idea!

Wondergirl, I love that design and it fits my budget - thank you.

I've also found the Orlando with overhead storage at asda - it's £200 and has two drawers underneath, and a double cupboard with shelves above the bed. There is also a shelf with storage underneath, just at the top where your head goes. The best thing about it is that they will assemble it for £14.95 - and if you order anything else that needs assembling, they do them all for no extra cost!

Tomorrow I think I'll get my tape measure out and some squared paper, as I have several choices now. I'll also ask my boys which designs they like - after all, they will be the ones to sleep in the beds!

    Thanks everyone x

I can't offer much advice other than what has aready been given, but we purchased ds a metal cabin bed over a year ago and have just taken it down this weekend. It was a bad purchase decision on our behalf, the metal would creak whenever DS turned over and the steps on it were really poorly designed (too thin and narrow) and hurt his feet when he tried to get down. He is in a regular single bed now that we had spare but were I to buy a bunk/ cabin tpe bed again, I would definitely go for wood.
  • There are a couple of cabin beds on here with loads of storage under the bed

    Looks like free delivery too
  • We bought this bed for our dd and she loves it. We kept the back off the big wardrobe for extra storage round the back, she also uses it as a bit of a den.

    here

Not sure if you've used Littleooods before or Very as its now known but new customers can get money off first orders. Just search the forums for the codes.
  • Thanks to everyone who has replied. There's several to choose from now, so I asked my younger son which he liked (my older son was at playscheme at the time, so I still want to get his views). Youngest has chosen one from Argos or the one from Asda at the moment - but he might yet change his mind!

Their dad is having them overnight tonight (a very rare occurance!), so I'm going to have a wander round Ikea. I don't often get the chance, so it's a good opportunity. I'll check out what they have as well, altohugh there is very little on their website.

just for you to be aware, we have one of those midi beds and I hate it as I cant sit on the side to read a story and the toys under the bed dont often come out as out of sight out of mind.
    :A :j
  • A good point karren - but I really need more storage!

I've just found an L shaped bunk on a site called Rainbow Wood. It's £370 and has shelving and a desk, so it looks as though it could be exactly what I'm looking for. I know it isn't a vast amount of staorage, but I could still have chests of drawers for both boys, and there would be plenty of space in the middle of the floor to play :¬)

For anybody else interested, I can't post links, but if you google Wizz L bunk, it will be listed under the Rainbow wood website.

I'm just off to use my tape measure again...

Did you sort out new beds kingfisherblue? I always wonder how easy it is to make/change bedding on a high sleeper.

If you haven't sorted anything yet, have you considered other storage options. You don't mention a wardrobe but if you have one is it possible to put another rail in? That would double the hanging space and/or a wardrobe that has drawers in it would provide extra storage but still use the same amount of floorspace. Divan beds that have drawer/s would do the same thing giving extra storage at no more floorspace room. If that meant you could then get rid of the chests of drawers then yu'd be able to use that space for a desk and bookcase.
  • I've decided to get the Malibu mid sleeper beds from Argos, Spendless. I also have reservations about changing bedding on a high sleeper! A mid sleeper is much easier.

I can't post a link as I am relatively new to the site, but the Malibu has three drawers at each end, with a pull out desk and three shelves/steps between the drawers. It is £215.99 with a sprung mattress, although I think I'll go for the slightly more expensive one with a protector mattress (£229.99). My disabled son is doubly incontinent, so it makes sense. The bed isn't too high for him, but there is plenty of space for clothes. This means that I can get rid of the chests of drawers in the room. Also, I can arrange the furniture slightly differently, so that there will be space for shelves (for toys) and a bookcase. there will also be space in the middle of the floor to play, which the boys have never had.

I've shown my lads some of the different options and this is the one that they liked the best, as long as it is in plain beech and doesn't have coloured doors (youngest was keen to inform me!). The reviews (I've read them for all the colours and mattress options!) are quite positive as well.

Both boys wanted desks and this means that they can both have one. Also, I can store sleeping bags (for Cub camp) and other items that are not used regularly behind the drawers, but still be able to access them easily by pulling out the desk.
